Tai Chi is an exercise of 丹田 and also exercise of stretches. However it is just briefly mentioned in many Tai Chi book and instructors as "意守丹田" and never elaborate what is meant by that. I cannot read their minds and I can only interpretate the meaning myself from different angles.
"意守丹田" - I think when your mind is focus on your 丹田 you are trying to register the pattern in your subconscious mind. At first the movement of your 丹田 trigger the energy/qi flow but once it is registered, qi/energy will go first before your movement. This is the basic principle of hypnosis. The other reason of your mind focus of the 丹田 is you want to move your 丹田. Moving 丹田 is not a common knowledge for people who practise Yang Style Tai Chi. For people who practise Chen Style Cannon fist Tai Chi, they know the power come from the 丹田. I will explain more why you have to move your 丹田 later on. Here is an extract from hypnosis:
Quote: | http://www.choosehypnosis.com/
SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
We often use self-suggestion in everyday life in the form of spontaneous thoughts
or observations. Thoughts such as "I cannot stop smoking, no matter how hard I try",
or "I’ll never be able to do this" are often powerful but very negative selfsuggestions.
The subconscious mind is our long-term memory. It is approximately 95% of our
mind. It is the most powerful computer ever devised. It is capable of running
multiple tasks simultaneously, it does not judge, criticize, analyze or reject. It acts
quickly but many times not properly. It is emotional and unaware. It does not
understand nor have a sense of humor and takes everything literally.
Our subconscious mind also seems to be innocent and naïve. It wants to help us
as much as possible and tries to help in the best way it knows how. However being on
the intelligence level of a four year old child many times it does not help us the
proper way and needs to be directed.
Once something becomes familiar, it becomes part of the subconscious mind. Wedo so many thing subconsciously each day that we do not even realize. Here are
some examples of things that we do subconsciously everyday.
Subconscious activities that became habits
Recite the alphabet - If you were to recite the alphabet it would probably only take
you a few seconds and many people even sing it as a song as they
recite it. You don’t even have to think about it consciously. However if
you were to recite half the alphabet… every other letter… it would take
you a much longer time because you are not use to this and have to
think of it on a conscious level, even though you are only stating half of
the letters.
Simple addition and math - Example… As quickly as you can answer these
questions. What is 2 +2 = ?, 4 + 4 = ? , 2 x 2 = ?, 5 x 5 = ? Those
were all very easy and you didn’t even have to think about them. They
were stored in the subconscious mind for retrieval when needed. Now
lets do one more… 86 x 374 = ? This one you have to do consciously.
Scratch your nose or sneeze - Do you just do it automatically or do you think … I
need to scratch my nose … bring my hand up to my nose ... Put out my
index finger … scratch up … down … up … down… Now put my hand
back down.
Typing - Many people can type almost as fast as they read. It almost seems as if
your fingers know where the keys are and have a mind of their own.
Remembering your phone number or D.O.B. - Think about how fast you recite
your phone number or your birthday because it is in the subconscious …
now think about how quickly you remember your friends or families
phone numbers and dates of birth.
Beyond a computer
The subconscious mind, like a computer, can make conscious judgments
and figure things out without given every detail or all the available
information. It does this by ciphering patterns, relying on past
experiences, taking shortcuts and reading clues. |
Let me explain a bit more about "minimum energy to achieve maximum power". In order to achieve this, how you move is very important. Many of you are playing badminton/golf/swimming.
Badminton -smashing the bird
Imagine you are not jumping to simplifying the situation, you move your belly button first, then your shoulder, your elbow, wrist and then smash. Repeat the smashing in slow action and feel your movement of these parts. If you try to put in arm force, the bird doesn't go too far. If you link your belly button, shoulder, elbow and wrist together and imagine it is a whip (or west towel_ and you will get the idea. You have to 松 in order to smash the bird. 松is not powerless.
Same situation in golf swinging and swimming.
It is quite obvious from the above sports, the Dan Tien move first and drag your shoulder, your shoulder drag your elbow and your elbow drag your wrist. The Dan Tien drag your hip, your hip drag your knee and then your ankle.
Unfortunately many Tai Chi Instructors are training you in an ineffective way. They tell you how you should move your hands and feet. In effect you are focus in your arms and feet and put unnecessary force in those area and move your arms and feet first. Think about dancing, once you figure the steps, your body will dictate how your feet and arms move. Same in Tai Chi, your dan tien dictate how your feet and arms move. That is one of the reasons I said "Tai Chi" is an exercise of your Dan Tien.
松 would mean something different in different context.
It could mean "化 剛 為 柔 ", the 剛 here means stiffness. Think about forward bending. If you are too focus to touch your fingers to the floor, you are using excessive force and cause stiffness in the area around your belly. You are using more energy but can't go lower. In the Yang style, there is kicking. Many beginners are too focus to raise their feet high and cause stiffness in their kau (hip) and end up standing on their heel with their body leaning backward. In the forward bend, you need to soften the area around your belly. In kicking, you need to soften your kau. Tai Chi is a martial art, other than deliver power, your position must always be in a stable position. In Tai Chi, you are using the minimum effort to maintain the greatest stability. To illustrate this scenario, just think about sinking your body to maintain your downward force to the ground and your kau are acting as suspension. If you are using the force of your legs to maintain the stability, you are using unnecessary force and can't maintain a stable position. Look at how the Japanese wrestler (Somo) stand, the legs are like a big "M" (the tips of the M are you kau). In other words this is 松 kau.
Why Dan Tien is important
Please refer to the following article (from one of my massage books). My interpretation is excess energy and qi is stored in 丹田. If you don't exhaust the energy/qi from 丹田, you will have endless energy. Tai Chi technique is using the least energy to achieve maximum power and you should be able to maintain energy/qi in your 丹田. It is also the center of gravity of the body. You have to sink your 丹田 to maintain a stable position. Once you understand 丹田 is so important, you will spend more time to train your 丹田. Try to be creative and find ways to train your 丹田. Chen style Tai Chi students use the long pole for training.
Streches
坐骨神經痛! 點解? 點醫? 這是一個很容易混淆的綜合徵. 如有任何問題, 請隨便問.
Sciatica - what are the causes and how to treat (2010-09-15)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....ture=share
My 坐骨神經痛 is due to misalignment of my lower spine. I exercise my spine inward and outward (form a bow or bridge) to get rid of my problem. There are many Yoga poses to fix up your lower back problem.
There are also many streching exercises for chiropratic patient. In order for the streching to be effective, the strech is in opposite direction.Streches are very importpart to keep you healthy and create the muscle strength to support your body autonomy and align back your bone structure. The streching also can be found in Tai Chi. However it is more difficult to strech while you are moving. If you are in Chen Style Tai Chi, you should know about the five bows theory with your spine forming a bow. Think about your spine as a bow with the upper tip as 百 會 and lower tip as會陰. In order to maintain the max stretch, you want to keep the tips of the bow align in straight line and hold in the position while pulling your 丹田 and 命門. I have seen people practising Tai Chi and rising or lower their body as a piece of pencil without streching at all. If your lower body is sunk to the ground, when you rise, your upper body is dragging/streching your lower body. When you lower down, you lower body is dragging/streching your upper body. When you move forward, your 丹田 is pulling your spine to form a bow. You can clearly see SiFu Liang Bao Sen moving the area around the 丹田 just like moving a balloon full of water during the Yang Style routine. In fact he is the only person I met who can do this. If you can strech your body like that, Tai Chi is a very good exercise for your health. My strech during Tai Chi routine is not strong enough and I have to rely on Yoga/Chiropratic exercises at the time being. This actually explains why I have so many minor health problems last year since I stop my Yoga/Wing Tsun activities and just focus on Tai Chi. Clearly my Tai Chi skill is not good enough.IMHO strech is a very important feature in Tai Chi.
沉 肩 聚 肘
What is it ? Shoulder done, elbow down. Done!
Not so fast. The phrase seems to be easy to understand and many Tai Chi instructors are not going to explain more to you (or help you to check whether you are 沉 肩 聚 肘 ). Think about when you are driving and your hands are on the wheel, now you are 沉 肩 聚 肘. Shoulder down, elbow down is only a prerequiste and the arm has to sink 沉.Many think it is easy to achieve. I have spend the whole year trying to do that.
To be continue

At our age, many of us are having high blood pressure or close to high blood pressure. I recently read a book regarding "cardiovascular interval training" and it is focus on training the heart.
It is a common knowledge you can reduce your blood pressure via cardio exercise but many don't know the effective way to do it. Basically the cardiovascular interval training is to divide your cardio workout into sessions and between the sessions, you relax to recover. Gladually you increase the time in your session and reduce your rest period. You can search the web for that. All the top winners are exposed to this training. If you buy the idea, this training is already in Chen Style Tai Chi (and Canon fist). That is why I said at our age, it is better for us to practice Chen Style Tai Chi while we are still young.
BTW I have practice the "cardio interval training" for a week and my blood pressure return back to normal and I can go back to spar. |

The principles are quite similar to Tai Chi. It is being explained in a simple and easy to understand by the Martial Artist. |

I have learned the Yang Style Tai Chi sword, saber a few years ago. As a matter of fact, I did not know what I was doing at that time. A few weeks ago, I watched the DVDs by ChenZhengLei from the Chen Village, it is very easy to understand. I pick up sword, saber, double sabers again. It suits me very well with all the body movement. It is just too crowded to learn in class with others. I have fun so far. I am glad my wife just renovated the backyard. I can practice the weapons including long pole next Summer in the backyard. The double swords routine is quite similar to double sabers routine, so I pass this time.
It is always good to watch the Chen Style and compare to the other styles that you are practicing.
